I appreciate response to my writing that's more thoughtful than, "Write about flatulence!" I fully realize that in my writing I've beaten the depression thing to death and I ought to write more positively. There's a reason I haven't written much this month -- but I'm working on it. Once school is over I'll have more time to get inspiration and less stress to drag down the writing. Regarding Reflections on School: I'd hardly say I made you out as a tyrant. I'm sure anyone would recognize you as a bit player in the scene, with the annoyance lying in the situation and not the director. As for my acting -- thanks, but I have high standards and I maintain that those parts sucked. Usually I get annoyed when people call me a genius, but your further agreement that grades are the result of just doing the right work leads me to believe you're of similar mind. Thank you. The ending to Reflections on Sewing was purely arbitrary -- I wanted a word that had nothing to do with sewing, and communism seemed to have enough of a shadow of applicability to the discussion I thought I might be able to confuse people. It's a gag, and I've had to deal with too many readers wanting me to explain it! In fact, that second paragraph had been written elsewhere and not used, so I wrote the other and called it a reflection. I didn't put a lot of thought into that one. I don't literally plan to die, but rather I have no greater ambition than that. I'm currently too occupied to see a larger picture than work with any clarity. I'm not going to go back on my beliefs! I think that the back button is just as good. "Return to main page" links were created for lazy people! As much as I appreciate you telling everyone about the quality of my site in my own guestbook, mightn't the message be heard better if you said such a thing SOMEWHERE ELSE? WHY pray tell am I not on your links page? I'll gladly link to you as well. As we were discussing on Thursday, I'm working on that whole "positive attitude" crap. Give me time, and theoretically I'll turn out more varied material. But as I see it, from a less-than-perfectly-happy position I'm more inclined to examine myself and the world around me. You're right -- central joe will evolve as I do. That's the whole point, and the source of its name. I went into it in detail in the now defunct "Reflections on central joe." (Yes, believe it or not I once had an extensive collection of even more depressing material. What's available now is the GOOD stuff!) Thanks again for the kind words. I'll try to keep it up, and you do the same. Great site, man. I promise I'll get around to reading your larger works sometime, and send you a detailed critique. Most Sincerely, Joe |

I'm beginning to talk in spoonerisms! No! Oh, MPowered doesn't give you static IP's, you have to get that as part of a special ADSL package from MTT, which offers 5 IP addresses, something like 10 email accounts, a preconfigured Cisco router, 10 MB of space on MTT's server, all for the low low price of about $300 a month. So much for a cheap connection for a web server. Anyway, I'm back at CPA and looking forward to fondl - uh I mean doing well in all my subjects. Oh, keeping tabs on peoples IP's isn't gonna help much if they dial into a modem pool, it's different virtually every time. Static IP's never change, so if some idiot in one of your classes has a little bit of knowledge about lame "cracking" tricks, then you could be inconvenienced/screwed by them at any time, because your IP is the same. Guy Burgess, ego satisfied for this year. Alright folks: don't forget to end your HTML tags!! =) And don't forget to buy the next iMac, apparently coming Oct 5, with some cool surprises. William Matheson - Mon August 30 1999 - 23:18:10 What's your favorite essay?: #20: Sages of Time - Part One: A Dramatis Personae of Sorts This poor soul was trying to use islandtelecom72-115.islandtelecom.com with Mozilla/4.61 [en]C-compaq (Win98; I) | Comments: Well looks like someone got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning... I don't suppose it would hurt anyone to know that you could see the ip numbers of the people who signed in by viewing the page source code... try it if you don't believe me!! So really, to anyone who would know what to do with an ip number, there's no difference in security, because they'd likely already have tried the source code. I'm not trying to be nosy, I think it's an interesting feature, and I'm not trying to promote malicious use of people's ip numbers. If I'm being nosy, it's all of that I want to have some idea that people are who they say they are... ie.: if it says "you suck will where do you get all this crap" and "hfx-xx.$ympatico.ns.ca", then I'll know it's probabally someone from CPA, regardless of what they say. I don't trace people's ip numbers except under a few very special circumstances: If they insult me, threaten me, harass me, or in some obscure way continually taunt me when I try to figure out who the hell they are. I have not tried to trace any ip numbers from this guestbook... yet. And even if I did trace something, what good would it do? All I have is NeoTrace, which does a couple of whois queries but the most I've ever found out about anyone is their ISP (Internet Service Provider), and zilch else. Which goes to show that there is not a hell of a big security hazard with people knowing each other's ips. Now, there is another thing I'd like to talk about here, while I have your attention (yeah, right, eh?). People should start using their real names more often on the internet. The internet needs a dash of honesty. Now I do understand some situations where you would prefer to remain anonymous (like if you were doing a journal site or something) but in some cases it gets completely ridiculous and out of hand. I'm not saying everyone should have their home phone number online yet, but we need to open up a little, as a community. If we're going to say things online that we couldn't say vis-a-vis in real life when we know who we all are, should we be saying them?? I realize I'm tooting my own horn here, but I'm saying contraversial things, yes, and I'm proud my name is on all of it!! I'm so proud of what I have to say that it's all stamped "William Matheson". Regards, - William PS: Was that some ego trip, or what? =) |

I kind of like it. (Speaking of HTML, if someone tries to put in their own music codes like Allan Ryan did over a year ago, I'll just remove the code from their entries... the same goes for background image codes. One day I was using IE and I discovered that he had "Magical Mystery Tour" playing (loudly), and Mr. Whitman's picture splattered all over the background. And this was like months after the entry was inserted, so needless to say I was displeased...). Hey, I wonder if anyone reads these? William Matheson - Mon August 09 1999 - 16:30:44 What's your favorite essay?: #20: Sages of Time - Part One: A Dramatis Personae of Sorts This poor soul was trying to use chtw04-18.pei.sympatico.ca with Mozilla/4.61 [en]C-compaq (Win98; I) | Comments: Well... looks like Free Guestbooks II finally launched, which is a really good thing. Of course, I had so many customizations put in before that I can't really think how to take advantages of the new simpler ways of doing the same things, so I'll leave everything the way it is. I spent long enough (four hours) on it before! =) Regards, - William |
