My Match Report: EIHL League game:

feisty encounter saw Panthers take the points with the odd goal in three and stay in touch with league leaders Coventry.

All the goals came in the second period with Panthers falling behind to a Phil Hill goal before striking back to win it with counters by Cameron Mann and Sean McAslan, left.

Penalty minutes totalled 74 with Devils' Brad Voth picking up 26 of those alone.

Panthers had dominated the opening period, outshooting Devils by 18 to 9 but being unable to find a way past Stevie Lyle in the visitors cage. It was Devils who took the lead with a goal by Hill (10th) on the powerplay at 25.44 but this only galvanised the home side into goal action themselves and at 28.53 Mann (11th) fired home to level. Panthers took advantage of their momentum and went ahead at 30.48 thanks to McAslan (17th) and held onto that position throughout the remainder of the game to claim the win.

My Match Report: EIHL League game:

A brace of goals from Greg Chambers, right, and Dan Carlson, far right, along with single markers from Adam Calder and Luke Fulghum gave Coventry a double weekend win over Newcastle.

It was almost a mirror image of last night’s game with Newcastle being unable to hold a lead and for Coventry to come from behind to win. This time both teams scored an extra goal but the outcome was the same.

Coventry with only one loss in their last eight games are now clear leaders in the league standings.

The visitors will be disappointed over the two games as they now trail the league leaders by six points.

The opening goal came for Newcastle at 4.27 with a powerplay goal from Mike Berry (14th) but Coventry were back on level terms also with a powerplay goal from Greg Chambers (13th) at 8.19.

Newcastle were back in front with yet another powerplay goal from Mark Rooneem (2nd) at 32.14. But then two goals in less than a minute inside the last two minutes of the period turned the game, Adam Calder (16th) at 38.23 and a powerplay goal from Dan Carlson (9th) at 39.08 put the home side 3-2 in front.

Carlson (10th) with his second goal at 42.19 gave the home side a two goal advantage. Then Chambers (14th) on the powerplay with his second at 54.55 made it a three goal spread. Almost immediately the visitors replied as Matic Kralj (9th) reduced the deficit at 55.17. But it was game set and match to the Blaze at 59.33 as Luke Fulghum (14th) found the empty net that had been vacated by Michel Robinson.

Teams & Result: Hull Stingrays 3 Belfast Giants 2 (After Penalty Shootout)
Date Played: Sun 29-11-2009

My Match Report: EIHL League game:

A real coupon buster in Hull as the Stingrays produced a major shock, snapping their own six game losing streak and denying Giants a sixth win in a row with a penalty shootout victory over high flying Giants.

Stingrays now move to within a couple of points of Sheffield at the bottom end of the standings but Giants, with their point for the shootout loss, remain in second spot, only a single point adrift of leaders Coventry.

Hero of the hour was Stingrays stalwart Jeff Glowa, left, who slotted home the winning shot in the first sudden death round but goaltender Tommy Sandahl was also superb, saving 54 of 56 shots. Giants were not helped however by the loss of Sean McMorrow (abuse) and Colin Shields (high sticks) to game misconducts in the opening period.

A fast start by both sides saw three early goals with Konstantin Kalmikov (15th) opening shorthanded for Stingrays at 1.49 and Brandon Benedict (10th) levelling for Giants at 2.31 only for Glowa (6th) to edge Stingrays back in front at 4.24 on the powerplay.

Giants then lost McMorrow at 4.34 and Shields at 14.28 to trail 2-1 at the first period break.

The second session saw Giants fight back and take the period with a single strike by Benedict (11th) at 22.46 on a 5 on 3 powerplay opportunity.

Into the third period and Giants pushed for the win but were unable to make any of their 19 shots on Sandahl count as the game went into a goalless overtime where Giants again dominated but could not force the winner.

The shootout saw Tom Walsh of Giants and Kalmikov score during the original three rounds but it was Glowa who grabbed the headline with his winning shot in sudden death.

My Match Report: IIHF Continental Cup in Bolzano game:

The Sheffield Steelers became the first Elite League side to make it through to the Continental Cup Euro Hockey Finals after wining their semi final group beating the favourites and host club Bolzano on Sunday evening 4-3 with Jeff Hubbauer scoring the wining penalty shot

Steelers took an early 2-0 lead with strikes from Robert Dowd and Joe Talbot before the Italians pulled a goal back just before the break

Bolzano then hit two 2nd period goals to lead 3-2 before Talbot his his 2nd to tie the game at 3-3

With no further goals in the final period the game went into overtime and then penalty shots. Jeff Legue scored the Steelers first shot and Andrew Verner then saved Bolzano's first attempt. Joe Talbot failed to convert his penalty shot with Bolzano scoring to tie the shoot out 1-1

Jeff Hubbauer then scored and Verner made an incredible save to send the Steelers into the history books and to the Euro finals in January.

Note: The Continental Cup Finals take place in Grenoble, France on January 15th to 17th, where Steelers will face the host club Grenoble, Minsk (Belarus) and Salzburg (Austria)

David Matsos Said .....

David Matsos had nothing but praise for his Steelers team after our 14 skaters beat out Bolzano's 20 in an incredible performance that sees the club make the Euro Finals in January

"This is an incredible night for the club, the supporters over here were as fantastic as the players were, they cheered us on every shift of all three games

"The guys could hardly skate come over time, they had given everything in all 3 games, they had nothing left, all 14 of them, going up against a great squad of talent that Bolzano had.

"We played tonight like I have always known we can play, this weekend we have played to our potential

"The defence was outstanding, Bolzano had lots of puck possession but we kept so much to the outside, we protected Verner really well and then when pucks got through he was simply outstanding as well

"Jeff Legue was brilliant on all three nights, an incredible player, Hubbauer last night, Talbot tonight, the whole team just gave their all. We battled through, we didn't get many calls go our way over the three days, tonight was just the same

"Lets hope this will now be the start of better times back home for us, we will have a beer or several tonight but then we will get right back into Elite League action on Wednesday against Cardiff"

Matsos Hails Joe Talbot as Euro Hero

"Out of the Hospital Bed and into the History Books"

David Matsos paid tribute to Joe Talbot, right, after the club made the Euro Finals and became only the 2nd British team to qualify for the Final stages of the Continental Cup. Joe Talbot was the hero says Matsos

"All the Steelers players are hero's" said Matsos "but if your looking for the story of this competition then it is Joe Talbot

"Joey had been suffering with a virus and after picking up 4 points on Friday in our win over The Hague he was very ill. He didn't sleep and his muscles were just seizing up, he was finding it hard to take on liquids

"He spent all Saturday in hospital having blood tests and on a drip, he looked as white as a sheep and to be honest we were all worried for him

"Then he turns up at the rink and wants to play because we were already short on numbers. We only played him for a few shifts and he ends up getting an assist on the game winner

"Last night he was ill as well, this morning he looked like death warmed up yet he still wants to play and scores 2 goals in the biggest game this club has played in 10 years

"Joey was a true leader, a real inspiration, he showed real Steelers grit and true toughness"

My Match Report: IIHF Continental Cup in Bolzano game:

Steelers played themslves into a winner-takes-all tournament decider against hosts Bolzano Foxes on Sunday with their second win in two days, this one a 5-4 success over Slovenian side HDK Maribor, after yesterday seeing off the challenge of Dutch champions The Hague by 4-3.

Matt Hubbauer was a hat trick hero for Steelers while Brad Cruikshank chipped in with a brace.

Cruikshank fired Steelers ahead early at 2.34 only for Maribor to level at 13.52 on the powerplay but Steelers edged ahead late in the opening period with Hubbauer on the powerplay counting at 19.28.

Another powerplay goal saw Maribor level again at 27.23 and then at 31.23 the Slovenians led for the first time but at 37.09 a shorthanded goal by Cruikshank hauled Steelers level once more.

On the powerplay at 41.56 Hubbauer fired Steelers ahead again and the same player completed a fine treble and made it 5-3 at 51.32 again on the powerplay. Maribor however, made it a tense finish when they pulled one back at 55.10 on the powerplay but Steelers held out after one or two scares to take all three points and leave them with the game against Bolzano on Sunday night to decide the group winner.

My Match Report: EIHL Game game:

Capitals followed up their shock win against league leaders Coventry last week with another fine home win, this time squeaking home 2-1 over fellow Celts Cardiff Devils.

A single goal was scored in each of the periods with the strike by Jeff Hutchins, left, early in the third period proving to be the game winner. Owen Fussey also counted for the home side in the opening period while Devils only goal was scored by player/coach Gerad Adams in the second period.

The opening session seemed to be heading blank until Fussey (15th) popped up at 19.09 to fire Capitals ahead. Devils then tied it when Adams (4th) scored at 32.08 and it stayed that way until Hutchins (9th) scored what turned out to be the points claiming goal at 45.49.

My Match Report: EIH Game game:

An important weekend for both these teams with only two points separating them and they will compete against each other again tomorrow night in Coventry.

It’s Coventry who will carry the bragging rights into tomorrows return fixture after coming from a goal down after the first period to win the match.

A double from Brian Lee, right, and markers from Dan Carlson, Adam Calder and Greg Chambers saw the league leaders run out 5-2 winners.

The home side had the advantage after the first period. Despite going behind at 10.56 with a powerplay goal from Greg Chambers (12th) they hit back with goals from Tyler Kindle (3rd) on the powerplay at 13.38 and Jason Tejchma (13th) on a 5 on 3 powerplay at 17.49.

Coventry were back on level terms at 34.55 with a goal from Brian Lee (4th) they then went in front just before the buzzer to end the second period as Adam Calder (15th) found the net at 39.37.

A second goal from Brian Lee (5th) on the powerplay at 51.43 gave the visitors a two goal lead. The game was over as a contest at 59.01 as Dan Carlson (8th) found the empty net after Newcastle had pulled goaltender Michel Robinson.

My Match Report: EIH Game game:

Giants made it five straight wins but Stingrays lost their sixth in a row as the Odyssey based side moved level on points with league leaders Coventry with a comfortable 5-2 success.

The visitors made a decent fight of this one until early in the second period when Konstantin Kalmikov tied it at 1-1 but Giants then moved clear with four straight goals to claim the points.

Tim Cook, left, scored a brace for Giants with the other counters coming from Colin Shields, Evan Cheverie and Jeff Szwez, while young Scot Lee Mitchell added a consolation late on for Stingrays.

Giants took some time to break down some stubborn visiting defence but did so on the powerplay when current EIHL scoring leader Shields (20th goal of the season) fired home from close in at 17.21.

Kalmikov (14th) shocked the home fans when levelling at 22.14 but Giants were soon back in front with Cook (4th) counting at 25.33. Cheverie (9th) added a third for the home side at 30.05 as they led 3-1 at the end of the second period.

While on the powerplay and a delayed penalty, Cook (5th) scored his second at 46.38 and Giants went nap at 51.19 as Szwez (13th) netted. Mitchell (4th) pulled one back at 57.55 but that was only a consolation for a by now well beaten side.

My Match Report: IIHF Continental Cup in Bolzano game:

Sheffield Steelers got off to a flying start in their Continental Cup campaign in Bolzano by beating Dutch Champions The Hague 4-3 on Friday afternoon

Jeff Legue led the charge with 2 goals, including the winner, with further strikes from Mark Thomas and Joe Talbot

Steelers will now play HDK Maribor (Slovenia) on Saturday afternoon in the 2nd game of the game tournament

Head Coach David Matsos was delighted with the result and the performance "That's more like Steelers hockey" he said "I thought we played a solid 60 minutes, sure we took more penalties than we would have liked but teams from the UK often do as the games are refereed in a different style

"Jeff Legue was simply outstanding from the first minute to the last, he scored two goals, made great plays and caused the Dutch trouble all night long. The Hague had to take penalties on Jeff and that created our best power play chances. His speed was just incredible and the Dutch couldn't live with him

"This style of hockey is right down Jeffs street, and we are seeing his speed being a major assault weapon for us

"I will watch the 2nd game of the tournament tonight between Bolzano and HDK Maribor and see what I can pick up ahead of our game against the Slovenians on Saturday afternoon. This in my opinion is the game of the tournament, beat Maribor and it sets up a Championship game against the host team Bolzano.

Steelers scoring:

1. Talbot (Legue) 5.59 PP
2. Thomas (Talbot) 10.56
3. Legue (Talbot, Hewitt) 33.00
4. Legue (Talbot) 49.56 SH

My Match Report: EIHL League game:

Cardiff Devils certainly seem to have the number of the Newcastle Vipers on their own ice as they handed out a second thrashing to the visitors this season.

Back in October it was 9-2 and this time it was 8-3 as Devils, led by a hat trick from Mark Smith and a double for Matt Towe, took the points to move level on points with their opponents tonight.

Devils were in command almost from the off as they raced into a 3-0 lead in only the eighth minute. Smith (9th of the season) started off the scoring with the first of four Devils powerplay goals at only 1.59 and further strikes followed from Max Birbraer (10th) at 3.51 and Phill Hill (9th) on the powerplay at 7.53. Vipers steadied themselves after that as the scoreline remained unchanged at the first period break.

In fact Vipers were next to score at 27.59 with Jason Tejchma (12th) counting before Vipers went nap with further strikes by Brad Voth (8th) at 33.59 and Smith (10th) at 39.55, both with the man-advantage.

The game looked like was going to end that way before there was a glut of goals towards the end. Towe (5th) shot Devils 6-1 ahead at 54.36 only for Jerraime Domish (3rd) to reply on the powerplay for Vipers at 55.37. Towe (6th) then struck shorthanded at 56.43 and Smith (11th) completed his treble at 57.57 before Ryan Mahrle (2nd) completed the scoring with Vipers' third goal at 58.40.
