Comments: I WAS LOWER BALL TURRET GUNNER ON A B-17 BOMBING BERLIN RAIL STATION ON MARCH 18 1945 WE DROPPED THE BOMBS @ AN 88 SHELL WHENT THRU THE GAS TANK & LEFT FORMATION. WE HEADED FOR RUSSIA & TWO ME109 FIGHTERS SHOT US UP. A FEW OF US BAILED OUT, THE PLANE WAS ON FIRE & BROKE IN HALF. I ENDED UP A PRISONER OF THE RUSSIANS FOR 8 DAYS. I TOOK A GUNNERS PLACE THAT GOT SICK & THE ONLY ONE THAT NEW MY NAME WAS THE PIOLET & HE WENT DOWN WITH THE PLANE & DIED.I WAS ON MY 6TH MISSION. THEY WERE ON THERE 15TH. How good do you think this site is: Well Done!!! Comments: Hey, I just started to work at a company built on the remains of the hard standings. I knew the base was there and decided to look it up on the net. I've stared at the remains of the concrete, broken and partly obscured by 'modern Britain'. I have always been in awe of those guys, and to walk where they walked is humbling. To read on this site, what they achieved reinforces my admiration and thanks. When I turn up for work on Monday I shall take a few moments to survey the surrounding fields,now covering the airfield, in silent homage to those airmen back in the US and to those that stayed with us. Former Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm Helicopter Aircrewman/SAR Diver myself, with aircrew service in Borneo and Malaya during the Indonesian 'Confrontation' with Malaysia in early 1960's and later at the British withdrawal from Aden. I have some appreciation of the wonderful job these B17 flyers did for us and the world when I was a baby.
