Comments: I am the chap who Mike told you about. I was introduced to Mike recently and found his collection and enthusiasm just inspirational. I was in China recently and Mike may have told you about my interesting experiences out there. You MUST go and see for yourself. But first do some reading. Ancient China measured Latitude from the elivated pole ... compasses pointed South, the circle was divided into 365.25 parts, the compass was divided into 48 points. My interest is making reproductions of old navigation instruments. Very slow progress because I am still at work. Your mariner's astrolabe puts mine to shame. During my search, I met with a distant cousin in New Jersey who has a heliochronometer - made by F Robson & Co of Newcastle-upon-Tyne: this machine looks like a Pilkington Gibbs but is slightly different from the one in the Science Museum. My design is of a similar concept to the Pilkington Gibbs but has a correction ring the full diameter of the dial.
