How good do you think this site is: Well Done!!! Comments: I am speaking on behalf of my father who is beside me, Vincent DiBenedetto (age 85) who served on USS Doyle from 1943 to 1946 as a radar man third class. He would be interested in hearing from any other sailors who served with him. He clearly recalls the history of the USS Doyle as documented on the Internet sites. He has one photo that he believes was shot in North Africa (Oran possibly) that I will scan and post. So great to see a site dedicated to the ship. Thank you. 2 Tue May 25 2010 - 16:59:23 Fullname: Michael C. Comments: My dad (Charles (Bud) E. Kemp served on the Doyle from the time it was commissioned in 1943 until the end of WWII in 1946. My dad rank was BM1/c and was also a gunners mate. Dad was on the Doyle during the invasion of Normandy on D-day, and didn't say much about it, but I found his ships log he wrote, and found out much of the time he was on-board the Doyle. My dad was killed in a car accident on Dec. 12 , 1973, and I miss him very much for his love of life, and dedication to my mother and all of us. 3 Wed April 21 2010 - 18:20:38 Fullname: John Turner Email: john.turner58@yahoo.com Where are your from?: Roanoke, VA Homepage name: Homepage URL: Reference: Word of Mouth How good do you think this site is: Looks great! Comments: My name is John Turner and I am the son of Robert (Bob) Turner who was a radio operator on the Doyle during WWII. If anyone has knowledge of him, I would love to know about it. Unfortunately, Dad died in 1990 and I miss him. He was a powerful force in my life and I will always be grateful for his and all those with him during that terrible conflict. 4 Sun February 28 2010 - 21:29:15 Fullname: Kathleen Calderone & Mary Ragucci Email: calderonemusic@att.net Where are your from?: New Jersey Homepage name: Homepage URL: Reference: Word of Mouth How good do you think this site is: Well Done!!! Comments: My Dad's name was Anthony Richard Ragucci but was known as 'Richie.' He was a torperdo man Seaman First Class and served on the USS Doylr from October 1943 - December 1945 and was always very proud of his service. He was at the beaches of the Normandy Invasion. My Dad saved a newspaper report about it and pictures showing the Doyle at Omaha Beach in support of her sister ship - The Emmons - firing at the German 88's behind the beach in the Sunday News (must be from Newark, New Jersey but I don't know which one.), January 6, 1952 entitled " Our Navy At War." News Fotos by Harry Warnecke, Robert Cranston,William Klein and Gus Schoenbaechler. He saved a comment & drawing of the Doyle from Coast Guard combat artist, N. (or H.) B. Vestal of Nre York City, showing the Doyle "firing flaming broadsides into the Cliffs of Normandy during initial invasion phases, June 6, 1944, blasting enemy pillboxes off the edge of the cliffs." According to my Dad they were in the south of England and the coast of France; the south of France in the Meditteranean and the Riviera; Naples, Italy; all over North Africa, in Casablance, Morrocco, & Oran, Algeria. According to my Dad's Navy record in a letter from Captain Harry Saunders, Commander of Destroyer Squadron Eighteen, dates September 30, 1944, the Doyle was part of that squadron who in the last 6 months a) escorted the heavy bombardment ships to European waters; b) escorted assualt conveys to the French coast and supported minesweepers on their initial sweeps of France; c) supported the US Army on "D" Day and thereafter by giving our troops close fire support on the Normandy beaches; d) screened the U.S. assualt area off Normandy from enemy attack for a period of 40 days; e) escorted a large landing craft convoy to the Mediterranean; f) escorted assualt convoys to the coast of Southern France; and g) protected the South France assualt area against enemy attack for 12 days and also engaged in diversionary and fire support tasks. He goes on to say "those operations were conducted without serious damage to any ship in the entire squadron and without the loss of a single man. Ships of the squadron killed many German troops and sank a total of about 6 German Torpedo boats and 2 German Corvettes." I hope this helps to fill info for anyone or their family. I also have a picture of my Dad with 3 other sailors (all dar-haired) & I don't know their names. They are in dark navy outfits with 3 sailors standing and sqautting down & leaning on his left knee. The sailor standing in the center has his arms around the other two and in the background are palm trees so I assume it is in North Africa or the Riviers. I could scan & email the picture if you think it could be someone you know. My Mom (Mary)tells me her & my Dad double dated in New York with a USS Doyle sailor who was from California and his date. They went to the Waldorf Astoria to see either Louis Armstrong or Count Basie (she can't remember which). 5 Sun February 28 2010 - 20:15:33 Fullname: Kathleen Calderone & Mary Ragucci Email: calderonemusic@att.net Where are your from?: New Jersey Homepage name: Homepage URL: Reference: Word of Mouth How good do you think this site is: Well Done!!! Comments: My dad was on the Doyle in WWII. He was either a GM3 or a GM2. I have copies of the deck logs but they aren not at hand so I don't know the dates but I think he was on board in 1943 because he was on LST 2 at the Normandy invasion. I served in the US Marine Corps in Viet Nam in 1966-1967. I would like to thank all crew members of the Doyle for their sacrifices. How good do you think this site is: No comments Comments: Is there anyone out there that served with my Dad, Hugh Gebhardt. He served 1/51 through 8/54. I know that his "Most Significant Duty" was the Doyle. He told a few stories about his service time, but only a few, not much. His headstone says SO2, and from the internet, I think that meant Sonar Operator. I'm just trying to track down some history. Thanks. And, THANK YOU to all who served. 9 Sun March 22 2009 - 18:11:54 Fullname: Pamela Gebhardt Anderson Email: pamdavid80@gmail.com Where are your from?: Houston, TX Homepage name: Homepage URL: Reference: NetSearch How good do you think this site is: Looks nice Comments: My Dad served on the Doyle during the Korean War.
