I am referring to the translation by Richard Lattimore, the University of Chicago Press. I prefer the translation by Stanley Lombardo, The Essential Iliad; this translation is quite moving. Achilles, and Patroclus WERE LOVERS, there is no doubt about it! In the Lombardo translation Sheila Murnaghan who wrote the introduction says that there is no indication that the two were lovers; I have communicated with her, and she concedes my point.
