How good do you think this site is: Well Done!!! The Start & Finish Years: 1973-1976 Comments: Hi, its me, Jim Archer, I don't know if any of you will remember me but this website certainly brought back the memories, they say your schooldays are the happiest days of your lives but you never believe it at the time. Being a quiet one I was teased a lot at school but realise now it was all just good schoolboy fun. I would be happy to hear from any old schoolmates. A late starter in life, I've now got 2 young kids and we're off to Australia this autumn in search of a better future. I was there at RCGS between 1973-1977, first memories of Alfie in his black gown making mole-like gestures to encourage us to get down to work. And the din after Jack Ryder's jokes, slamming the desk lids, pretending it was so hilarious - then Mickey Murton walked in - "My name is Mr Murton, you will NOT play me up or mess around!" and the atmosphere just died, it was like something out of David Copperfield. And how many of you remember Clem in his walking boots and shorts, you could see his hairy spindly legs under the desk, murmurs of "Cleem!" and "Gert boots on 'an!". I remember how hazardous it was going to the outside toilet at breaktime - "Wanna join the smokers union do'ee boy?" followed by a deadleg. Marvelling at Stanley Cox's ingenious equations and that time he swatted a wasp which had landed on Steve Berryman's head. Trying not to fall asleep in Drac's endless Physics lectures and Skelt's "Cum'on, lad". And was it Johnnie Walker who filled a condom with hydrogen floating on the ceiling in the Chemistry lab, Chalky wondering what the amusement was about. And there was Driver's northern sarcasm and tuff Cuth and Fearnley, leaning back and forth in assembly, in his superior way. Algie bravely carrying on the French lesson oblivious that no-one was paying attention. Piggy Roberts taking the mick out of Steve Millership for his Birmingham accent. At the top was gaunt-looking Parkes, and Harry Brown who would affectionately put his arms around us (help!). The best teachers kept control and still managed to be friendly - Dicky Ball and Terry Prior, followed by Smiffy and Parsley. And whatever happened to poor Gerard - flipped his lid in the exams and never heard from him again (t**s)! Those were the days when Queen, Wizzard and Pink Ffloyd were at their best, the music scene's never been as good as it was in the 70's. Remember the school disco, then in the last days everyone pushed each other in the swimming pool and poor Laurence Wright, head boy at the time, was kidnapped by 2 lads with a car, taken out to a field near Chacewater and left with only a pair of shorts to get back! I actually started a business with Laurence some years ago, we made the first ever multimedia disk on Cornwall. Sold well for a few months but then the net came along. Cornwall's great, nowhere quite like it, I'd love to stay but no jobs. And our school, like Cornwall, was full of character, I'm glad I went there. Would like to hear from Chris Kemp, Dave 'Basin' Williams, 'Dim Tim' Coghlan, Nicholas Shields, Colin French, John McNeill, Keith Lynham, Alan Griffiths, Ollie Olson, Peter Morgan, Trever Angove, Peter Whitakker, Steve Millership, Alan Rice-Smith, Jeremy Laurence, Shaun Kelly, Coz Robbins, Adrian Jopling, Matthew Pulham, motorbike maniacs Alex Arthur and Peter Hepton, Faz Smith, Garry Grantham, Tony Philips, Steven Trott, Chris Pellow, Nigel Halford, Petina Guilietti, Angela Pengelley, Will Beckerleg, Daniel & Karenza Warbutton, the teachers (sorry about the nicknames!), and anyone else who knows me. Even Mark Haigh. Drop me a line and come and visit me down under! Cheers now, all the best from Jim. 2 Mon August 07 2006 - 21:33:59 Full name: DAVID BRADY Email: DAVEYBRIT@YAHOO.COM Where are you from?: USA Homepage Name: Homepage URL: Reference: NetSearch How good do you think this site is: No comments The Start & Finish Years: Comments: I have a silver pencil with the inscription R.C.G.S 30th March 1914. How good do you think this site is: Well Done!!! The Start & Finish Years: 1967-1972 Comments: I attended RCGS from 1967-1972, when Arthur Parkes expelled me and others for alleged vandalism in the outside toilets. The look on his face when he said "Finally I've got enough to get rid of you" will live in my memory for ever!! I even had the cheek to ask him if I could still play for the school football team on the coming Saturday, to which he gave me a short, sharp response. To be fair, I was a bit of a rogue and this event was the kick up the backside I needed and I joined the navy prior to 30 years service in the Police Service, attaining the dizzy heights of Inspector (have recently retired). I once returned to the school in full naval uniform on a recruiting stint, and remember Greenslade looking on incredulously as he perhaps recalled my not so illustrious school career! Re your entry on Tex Tromans - he always used to fall asleep in exams - cue mass referring to crib sheets. He also had a butcher job done on his hair once, which was rumoured to have been done by one of his children whilst also snoozing. Mass hilarity in class. Also in my year was Rory Mcgrath of tv fame - who was much slimmer back then!! He had a mate called Plug Pugh and whilst they were usually quite reserved lads, they both came into their own even then, when doing comedy sketches. Best fun in class was a toss-up between Alfie Davey and Jack Ryder with the latter probably just shading it with his corny jokes which always led to an unbelievable din as we showed our appreciation. Remember one such occasion when another teacher Ivan Peters came into the classroom to tell us off, thinking there couldnt possibly be a teacher with us. His face when he saw Jack was a picture!! Sport was always good with Fernley, although I too remember getting the slipper for forgetting my kit once or twice! 4 Mon March 27 2006 - 07:46:58 Full name: Terry faull Email: terryfaull@aol.com Where are you from?: North Petherwin Homepage Name: Homepage URL: Reference: LinkExchange How good do you think this site is: Well Done!!! I am lucky enough to still live in cornwall and I often see a few of my old year. My school days consisted of taking as many trips abroad as I possibly could. {Now I know why my parents were never wealthy}and in the latter years driving off to the pandora for lunch or sneaking off to Godrevy with the surf boards. I have just noticed my brother Kevin on the notice board. 6 Fri February 10 2006 - 22:50:47 Full name: Paul Knight Email: paulshambala@yahoo.co.au Where are you from?: Originally Redruth now Auckland NZ Homepage Name: Homepage URL: Reference: Just Surfed On It! A lot of very familiar faces.I can only be sure of mine as I know I was standing next to Mike Griggs. 'Arthur' Parkes also predicted that I would never do well. I got a Degree in Portsmouth, a PGCE from Southampton and worked on and ran research projects on breast cancer(in the Middlesex Hospital Medical School0 and then stroke and sub arachnoid haemhorrage!(the Insitute of Neurology, Queen Square). I then opted out for a while and ran my own sailing tuition and yacht delivery company for 4 years before children forced a shorebased existance as a science teacher in Hove and now I teach science, amongst other things, to excluded kids in Worthing. I still miss the carols at Christmas Eve in the various bars in Camborne, you just cannot get that atmosphere anwhere else. Where are you... Gert, Theweles etc I am sure that if we put our tales to gether a lot of the unsolved events that took place would be solved. This will mean something to those in the Know... The telegraph pole and the tied up kid, the rat invasion etc, the list is very very long. I am sure that a number of us would be locked to day for some of the things that took place, perhaps a film is what's required. I enjoyed RCGS. Keep the news coming.
