Comments: Hi, I have just arrived in England and am doing some research on the family name, whitby and the ship building company they held. Apparently Andrew Fishburn was the son of Thomas Fishburn and was sent to Australia as a marine in the first fleet in 1788, and my father is a direct decendent. If you have any information about the ships or the family line could you please email me as I plan to visit the area in the summer and do some more research.
Many thanks Liz Roberts (nee Fishburn)

Comments: In 1969 3 of my sons and a nephew and myself were looking for fossils between Sandsend and Kettleness. It was a spring-tide and a wreck was exposed that we hadn't seen before,we had obviously gone too far,and the tide was coming in very quickly.
we had gone past Sandsend Ness and when I tried to get back the waves were pushing me against the cliff.I made the children go up a cove to higher ground and wave their scarves to atract attention.I ran across the rocks into Sandsend,I was literally spitting up blood.I rejoined my wife who had stayed with 2 smaller children, and telephoned the coastguard.
The police came first(absolutely useless)and then the coastguard.Meanwhile the maroons were fired and the Mary Anne Hepworth was launched and soon arrived beneath the cliffs were the children were taking shelter. We were directly above them and the coastguard was in contact with the boat.
I got a lift back into Sandsend with the coastguard and drove in our car back into Whitby.
Fortunately they were none the worse for their experience, and I made a donation to the RNLI.and sent the crew money for a drink.
All of the children wrote letters of thanks to the crew.

Comments: Ilove this site, am visiting my home town with my daughter who was 3 last time she was here, (now 32!)
Whitby was always my favourite place, will be staying at least a couple of days, have her checking out everything on this site. Fish & chips at the Magpie a definite. Does anyone out there recall an incident involving the 199 steps in the very early 60's. Someone I knew back then built another step to make it 200 one April Fools Day. Can't wait to be back!

Comments: I am in the process of building a model of Endeavour for my stepson. The plan does not show the detail of how the planking comes together at the stern and so I did a search on the internet for more detail and found your site and solved my problem. I hope mine turns out as great as yours did. I also have a model of Kitty Sark(scale: 1/115), on the go and am at the rigging stage which is very intricate, so bouncing betwean the two models gives me a bit of relief from the eye strain.

Comments: Photography has been my hobby for over 50 years. I have always had a deep appreciation of the work of Frank Sutcliffe. How fortunate the people of Whitby are to have such a beautiful record of their home town and taken by a local son.He must have pocessed great foresight in addition to his enormous ability to see and record 'the moment' for his town. There have been many superb photographers, but Frank's work is up ther amongst the greatest!.I have to say Geoff, you have paid your tribute to him also by the quality of this site. Great work! Best regards. David Watson

Comments: Should be up again this year in June sometime ? We normally stay in, or around Goathland, but go to Whitby most days. Jolly Sailor fish & chips, Samuels Ale, up the steps to the abbey, Yorkshire curd tarts, the expensive little collectors toyshop with tinplate trains in, Inn on the Moor, Birchall Inn, Beck hole, down to earth friendly folk, what more could you ask for ? I will view your garden when I come up, so keep it tidy!

Comments: I have just found out this week my g/g/grandfather John Bleakley was the ships storeman aboard HMHS Rohilla and was one of those who died. I was searching through the net for info on the wreck and came across this site, Im planning a trip to Whitby and would be pleased for ANY help as to the best place to search for info on the Rohilla or any other info that would help in my family research.
