I learned much of Cpt Cook at school, as he 'discovered' Australia, it was so interesting to see where he actually came from, I did not know of his Whitby connections. My mothers family , the Agar family, were from the Egton Bridge area and go back quite aways. I tried to contact any students from the Whitby Grammar School class of `44, but no luck Guess I was pushing my luck there !! Anyway ,like old elephants,I think often about the friends in the old days and the good times we had and would like to squeeze in a last visit , but the Whitby I grew up around was different to that of to-day so sometimes it spoils the memories.Anyone interested in Whitby and district should read the two books by Malcolm Barker --- they`re good. You know I read the "Obits and Memorium " sections of the on -line Whitby Gazette but they have screwed it up so much that you get names of people from all over Yorkshire but whitby people seem to be omitted , Oh! How good do you think this site is: Well Done!!! Comments: Many happy holidays with my children in Whitby in the 1970's/80's. We stayed overlooking Boghall (where apparently the whales were processed many years ago?)in one of the "Captains" Houses. The Pub round the corner called the "First In Last Out" where whalers once congregated before and after their whaling trips. It was like sitting in someone's front room, so friendly and homely. I can still smell the smoke from the chimneys of the little terraced houses when we walked back to where we were staying. The tiny fish and chip shop on the corner which sold the best fish and chips ever (should have been in the Egon Ronay Guide). My 11 year old son could go fishing on his own in the harbour and we wouldn't have to worry. My 10 year old daughter scouring the beach for fossils (she found a beautiful ammonite which my grandson has shown to his class at school). We always had such beautiful weather and so many lovely memories which we still talk about. I visited Whitby about 6 years ago and it has changed with the new Marina and an upmarket Fish & Chip Restaurant. However, the atmosphere has not changed too much and the history still oozes from every street. As you have probably guessed, it is my most favourite place in all the world and I have travelled a lot over the years to many many countries. Nothing compares to beautiful historic Whitby...... How lucky you are to live there!
