In my role I am looking at developing a themed day to educate children on the importance of the RNLI through a whole day of activities. I was so touched by your site that I thought it would be wonderful if I could include the story of the gales of 9th Feb 1861 of the dangers the men faced and consequently the introduction of self righting lifeboats. Being a north Yorkshire lass myself, hailing from Middlesbrough, I spent every other weekend in Whitby and feel compelled to keep this story alive. I was wondering if you could help me with part of the story. I would like to know if possible what happened to the Merchant and her crew. Teaching children, I know that this is one question that they will ask. (You know how 7-12yr olds are). I have tried researching on the internet for the last two days without joy, so I decided to ask the experts.
