We want to get half a dozen girls who will be pets and hopefully provide us with an egg or two. We already have names for them and hubby has almost finished building a run. There was already a chicken house in the garden - just have to make them some lovely warm laying boxes! Very pretty as are the magpie variety. Comments: G'day, Your site was the first one up on my search for sussex hens, excellent, so I thought I would ask you for some help, if you don't mind. Our 9yo daughter came home from a friends house with two day-old chicks to add to our other two chooks. We built a new chook pen to house them (after they spent the first few weeks on top of our hot water system to keep warm!) then when big enough added them to the big pen. However, they still have not started laying and they must be about 5 months old now. Am I doing something wrong, how can I tell if they are boys the easy way (sorry, I know dumb question). Any help you could give would be soooo helpful. I also love the shots of egg color. I am a nut for eggs of any color other than white. I wish more pictures of your birds were better quality. It looks like you have beautiful birds which are very well cared for. I just wish I could see them in more clear detail. All in all a wonderful site.
