Comments: I have had two 1500 Avengers from 1987 to 1993, loved them both dearly especially the first one as my late Dad owned it and gave it to me when he got a VW Golf, they were a K reg 1972 and a M reg 1974. Sadly the first one went to the rust bucket in heaven but not before I found the newer automatic sittng in a garden unused, bought it for a tenner and then stole the bits off the older one to make the newer one a manual with the old engine, with twin headlights, sporty dashboard, twin carbs and I fitted a brazil head(Found that head in a second hand car parts shop for a tenner!)then I also fitted a servo to stop it quicker adnd electronic iginiton scraped from another later avenger car in a scrap yard, I admit it went like stink until one day the spark plugs burned out causing a huge loss of power whilst chasing a Range Rover at over 90mph how embarrasing as I was keeping up with it so well, did find out it was a weak mixture at higher reves, changed the needles in the carbs and all was well again. In the time I owned it I changed the rings, main and con-rod bearings doing so with the crank still in place, valve seals, prop joints, clutch and even the core plugs after one brazil head leaked just one day after I put it on and I had to take the head off as it was at the back end and I could not reach it. Still it ws a good car and was reliable apart from one of the carb throttle flap screws fell into the engine and lodged itself under a valve thus causing the push rod to drop out, mananged to get the screw out through the spark plug hole, amamzing I thought! It was a tough old engine though and was still going strong when I sadly sold in 1993 for £50 as I was just about to become a Dad and had to buy a newer Ford Sierra car for safety sake, it had done well over 125.000 miles and still going strong, I saw it many a time for a good few years after. I would love to have one again but now my 1994 Mondeo is just far too good to lose, but the time to replace that is fast coming round as marriage is now on the cards!
