How good do you think this site is: No comments Comments: Ken, I was pleasantly surprised to find your website, it is a great trip down memory lane. My parents brought us (six kids) to Australia from England in 1973 as 10-pound Poms. Our 28th anniversary since stepping off the Australis was on October 16. Our family met a Scottish family (two parents and five kids) from Glasgow on the way out to Australia and we have been friends ever since, despite the fact they first moved to Queensland and we stayed in Sydney. The voyage on the Australis was one I will never forget. For a kid of eight, it was a real adventure. We spent the first half of the trip trying to get lost in the many corridors (or so it seemed) and new the place pretty well by the time we docked at Woolloomooloo wharfs (I think I spelt that wrong). Did you know that Delvene Delaney (alias Mrs Strop from the Paul Hogan Show) worked in the child-minding centre of the ship for a time. 222 Tue October 16 2001 - 07:45:27 Fullname: John LECK Email: mattash@froggy.com.au Where are you from?: Newcastle England What Is Your Connection With The Australis?: Reference: Just Surfed On It! Comments: The reason I checked out your site is because - when I moved into my house (complete with pool) - there in the pool house was a life belt - with the words SS Australis - just still visible. It's a bit battered and tatty but I thought someone might like to give it a loving home. 228 Tue July 24 2001 - 16:34:41 Fullname: Kyle Joseph Beetham Email: kbeetham@yahoo.com Where are you from?: Born Canada; Bred NZ; British Blood What Is Your Connection With The Australis?: Reference: Just Surfed On It! Comments: Ken thanks for doing this page, I sailed on the Australis in 1973 (i think) from Southampton to New Zealand with my brother Rhys and my mother (Marilyn) and father (Malcolm). I'm facinated to find out about her as I don't have many memories from that far back, except for the smell of the salt in her decks. 229 Mon July 16 2001 - 21:34:19 Fullname: M. Comments: Your site brought back memories of crossing the Atlantic in August 1955 on the S.S. America from Ireland. I was eighteen and boarded this liner in Cobh, Co. Cork. I remember taking a tender out to the America and then climbing up a ladder to board and being overwhelmed by her size and grandeur. We arrived in New York on August 16, 1955, a day after we ran into the tail end of a hurricane out at sea. That sticks out in my mind, because for me, a Catholic, August 15th was a Holy day and Mass was offered in the morning and I recall walking a passageway and holding on to brass railings. Everyone was very calm. Until reading your article on this great ship, I had no idea what an illustrious part her services played in history. Now and then I take out some mementoes of my trip and I will soon be rummaging around again and look at menus and recall the days when I was young, and arrived in New York on a hot, steamy day and being overwhelmed by the "bigness" of everything. I enjoyed so much reading about this wonderful vessel and thank you for taking the time to put this site together.
