How good do you think this site is: No comments Comments: My father was a member of the 70th Infantry Division 275 Infantry Regiment. His unit departed Boston on the SS West Point in December, 1944. He was subsequently captured by the Germans in the defense of Phillipsbourg France on January 3, 1945. Interred in two different Stalags, he was liberated by the Russians in May of '45. Complaining of a sore throat, he was taken to a Russian field hospital from which he simply disappeared. He has never been heard from since. Thought I'd check this web site to see if anyone might remember shipping out with him. 202 Sat June 15 2002 - 03:50:16 Fullname: sandra Byott Email: Tony.e@optusnet.com.au Where are you from?: Queensland. I was accompanied by my mother, we had such a wonderful trip half way across the world.Especially me as i was 17 years old. I remember my mother getting lost everywhere she went and having to take her around to wherever she wanted to go. The band on board at that time were wonderful. Going across the pacific ocean was a different matter very rough and all the outside decks on the ship had to be closed off. It was really the best time i had on that ship and such wonderful memories to look back on and to tell my children. At the time you do not think much about it but many years later memories still come back to you. 204 Fri June 07 2002 - 12:52:47 Fullname: Mike Ashmore Email: ucforever@bigpond.com Where are you from?: Woodbridge Tasmania Australia What Is Your Connection With The Australis?: Reference: Just Surfed On It! Comments: I was on the Australis during October 1970, when it went on fire. I was only 11 years old but remember being woken up in the middle of the night and being taken on deck. I was most upset at leaving my Teddy Bear in the cabin. Reading your page about the fire I am shocked that it started at 3.30pm because we knew nothing until the early hours. My memories are of sitting on deck all day and eating only oranges. We spent 5 days in Fiji and ate at some wonderful restaurants beside the beaches. I remember buying leis of flowers and putting them in our cabin to try and get rid of the smell. We were told that the crew mutineed and that the officers had to force them at gunpoint to fight the fire, I don't know if this is true or not. My memories are still pretty vivid and remember being flown to Hawaii and Niagara where we were kept in a hanger. 208 Tue May 14 2002 - 12:37:37 Fullname: Rory Raymond Email: roryraymond@hotmail.com Where are you from?: Australia What Is Your Connection With The Australis?: Reference: Just Surfed On It!
