Comments: i sailed to aus in1973 as a10 year old with my mum dad and sister.from the uk, i can rember it well, i remember once as the indoor pool was filling up i put my hand through a hole in the door and unlocked it, it was great fun playing in it as the boat rocked as it filled up with water, i got in big trouble wen the life gaurd came and court me then my dad had a big row with him. another time i opened the port holes up in the toilets at water level and the sea poured in it scared me and i ran away.THEIR I ADMITT IT WAS ME 35 YEARS LATTER , SORRY FOR TRYING TO SINK THE SHIP. 3 Sun March 15 2009 - 06:31:20 Fullname: John M. Comments: Today it is exactly 40 years ago that I immigrated from the netherlands to Australia with the ss Australia. We sailed from Southampton UK via Gibraltar, Athens, Dubrovnic, Messina and Cape Town to Freemantle and further to Sydney. There was a port strike on in Melbourne, so we bypassed this city. However, Melbourne was my destination and we had to go by rail, together with a big group of Greek migrants by rail to Melbourne. I had a wonderfull time on board of the Australis. Comments: Well done Steve.Our family left Bremenhaven in Germany in 1971.Like most who have travelled this great journey with this majestic ship, its unforgetable and I was only 9 years of age when we landed in Sydney harbour on 15th May, 1971.I remember, the Neptunes Party, the rough crossing around Cape Town and learning my first words in English (shut-up), whilst watching Oliver Twist in the Theatre.Great memories Thank You. Very fond memories of a brilliant trip apart from not stopping at Acapulco as was scheduled. Travelled with my brother Philip.
