Comments: It's been over forty years, Don, and I figured it was about time for me to look you up. I spoke with Jack Chalker shortly before his death and he mentioned you were living in California. An old article by Joe Mayhew added a couple of additional clues. I followed the bread crumbs from there. Email and let me know how you're doing. Do you still use the walking stick? --Tom Haughey

Comments: It's odd that someone who bills himself as a "wordsmith" ("I'm a Wordsmith Star Class") should have so many errors in his website. //

"An Ionic Column is not so sturdy ..." - the word SO is improperly used in place of AS. //

"That did not seem to phase the telemarketer" -- the word you meant in this context is spelled "faze." //

"The company does not have enough faith in it's product ..." - The apostrophe should not have been used; the word is "its." //

"The misapproriation of the language ..." MISAPPROPRIATION is incorrectly spelled. //

"It could quickly cost a bad Merchant everything ..." - there is no reason to capitalize the word merchant; it is not a proper name. //

"larger and more commerical companies ..." - I take it you mean "commercial." //

"one could hardly hope to have money to purchase everything in it that one wanted. If you could afford any music ..." - Which is it, the formal "one" or the informal "you"? You (or one!) really should decide, and stick with the decision. //

"I was dissapointed ..." I hope you'll soon regain your sappointment. (The word you used should be spelled "disappointed.") //

"the Customer is beginning to work for the Seller .." - again, "customer" and "seller" are not proper names and shouldn't be capitalized. //

"the company's incompetance ..." "Incompetence" is misspelled. //

"But if I have to work for you, writing endless letters and straightening out inappropriate accounting procedures: you are just not worth the trouble!" - A colon is used where a comma is appropriate. This is incorrect punctuation. In such context, the colloquial usage of a hyphen for emphasis has come to be accepted. In my view, the use of a colon here is an affectation. //

"It was also, this late, inadequate and in error." - This sentence seems to have no clear meaning. //

"... the overall implicatioins ..." - "Implications" is misspelled. //

" ...MHS feels it is the problem of the customer of straighten out ... -- presumably you mean "it is the the problem of the customer TO straighten out ..." //

"I think it is time for Congress to start investigating, both the mail order music industry (starting with a full investigation of the books and practices of the Musical Heritage Society), and an even fuller investigation of the use of the Credit Industry to intimidate people into paying debts which they do not owe." - This is faulty parallelism. Congress can certainly start investigating the mail order music industry, but I'm not sure you want Congress investigating an even fuller investigation. //

I could supply many more examples, but the above should be ample. //

You style yourself as a "wordsmith." However, you've made many spelling, syntax, sentence construction and style errors in this website. //

Some of these errors may be the result of a lack of formal education. Others you no doubt made out of sheer carelessness. Do you (proof)read what you've written? If not, why not? //

I sentence you to a semester of Freshman composition class at your nearest university. Get thee hence! //

Comments: Don: A little autobiography that you might find amusing.

I am a freshly minted 50 year old male who cut my teeth on ST fandom back in the 70's in Ontario Canada, and went on to be active in Sime/Gen and Darkover fandom for a time. Although I gafiated many years ago, I kept up with MZB's published work, and almost went to her funeral (I relocated to the Bay Area in 1987) out of respect and admiration.

In the 1990's, I discovered the erotic fiction of one Mason Powell through Manifest Reader. Stories like "The Doom of the Marquis" literally had enough power to send me into a kind of sexual trance, strong enough on the first few readings to result in orgasm virtually without manual stimulation.

I just stumbled across the fact, much to my amazement, that Mason Powell is the pseudonym of a Greyhaven alum named Dom Studebaker.

Talk about serendipity!
