Comments: It's been a long time since we had a contest, and considering it's Christmas Eve and I have just come across a scarce first edition of the US hardback edition of THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT, I am offering it (signed with any message you like) to whoever can answer most of these questions correctly:

1) What was 'a noiseless community of lived-out lives'?

2) Who was the lost white chief of the Ugarugah tribe?

3) What was Operation Stripes?

4) Who was called 'Tabac-Sec' and why?

5) What did Otto use to hunt murderers?

6) What would you expect to find in safety-deposit boxes at the Hollywood Divine Hotel?

These questions all come from my earlier books so most of you should have read them. Send as many answers as you can to manitouman1@yahoo.com by midnight on January 1, 2013...that will give you an extra day to recover from your hangover.

Comments: Hi, Michael. I am not specifically writing shorter books these days...it's just that DESCENDANT was always intended to be a long novella, while THE PAINTED MAN is part of the Sissy Sawyer psychic series which have always been a little shorter. However you may notice that paper economy comes into it, too. There are more lines on every page than your average mass-market paperback, and if FIRE SPIRIT for example were to be published as a regular paperback it would come out at 300 pages plus. I have just finished DROUGHT which is well over 400 pages and I am working on SCARLET WIDOW which will be of similar length. A novel is really only as long as the story that it is telling, and I try not to fill out my books with unnecessary padding.

Comments: Hi Graham, Happy Holidays from a nice and sunny Atlanta. Quick question (or maybe not): I just received a batch of your newer books, "Descendant", "Fire Spirit", "The Painted Man", and they all hover around the low-mid 2oo's page length. What gives? I should add they look quite uniform on my book shelf.
Keep writing and we'll keep reading!

Comments: Thanks for your message, Anne-Lize. I have been asked before if I would consider teaching writing online (and, strangely enough, by another South African!). You will find some "rules of writing" in the fiction section of my website, but regretfully I simply do not have the time at the moment to take it much further than that. I am helping one young lady to write her first novel but doing this properly is extremely time-consuming. I will consider an online course in the future when I am not so pressed by deadlines.

Comments: Dear Mr. Masterton
I am one of your greatest fans, from South Africa!
I was just wondering if you ever thought of teaching an online course on writing? It will be truly an experience, and I believe there will be many like me, who would be interested in learning from someone as great as yourself.
Kind Regards
Anne-Lize

Comments: Yesterday was an example of real horror. The day before was an example of real horror. And the day before, and the day before that. While we are shocked and saddened by what happened in Connecticut, don't let's forget that little children are being killed daily in Syria and elsewhere in the world and how we can continue to behave like this in the 21st century shows how barbarous and unfeeling and selfish and cruel we still are.
