Their minds can create figures out of shadows and shapes and they are not experienced enough to be able to think that, logically, there couldn't be a woman standing in the corner of his room. Even adults suffer from this sometimes, when they see a dressing-gown hanging on the back of a door at night, or a jacket slung over a chair. All you can do is explain this to him in the simplest terms and also switch on the light and show him that there is nobody there.
